How To Install A Tile Redi Shower Pan With Bench: A Step-By-Step Guide

Do you have to tile a tile Redi shower pan?

The surface of our shower bases is ready to tile: you can set tile directly on the surface of the shower pan once it is installed.

What mortar to use for tile redi shower pan?

Tips for TileRedi Shower Pan Use a generous amount of Versabond tile mortar in about a 1” bed, temporarily framed with a 2×4. (Some have found success using a bed of spray foam.) Lay it down into the soupy bed of mortar, moderately press it in place, then check with a level.

How does a tile shower pan work?

The shower pan is a waterproof barrier made of either lead or vinyl that is formed into the shape of a pan. It’s placed under the tile floor of a shower. The purpose of the pan is to catch any water that may seep through the tile and grout and direct it to the drain.

Can you tile over a prefab shower pan?

For do-it-yourselfers, using a premade shower pan with tile is easier and far more foolproof than the traditional tilers’ method of forming a shower base from scratch.

Do I need cement board under shower pan?

Whenever installing tile in any area of your house, you need a special substrate or base layer. In showers, the standard substrate is a tile backer like cement board or some type of sheet or liquid membrane that protects the shower stall’s underlying structure from water.

Is tile adhesive or sand and cement for shower tray?

Install the shower tray on a 15mm depth of weak cement mix (sand/cement ratio 5:1). Tile adhesive can be used as an alternate to sand or cement.

How thick should mortar be under shower pan?

Then you float a dry-packed mortar bed over the pre-sloped membrane to a thickness of at least 1.5″ thick. The mortar bed should have wire reinforcement fabric suspended within the mortar bed if it is a shower pan area larger than 65 square feet. Otherwise you can leave off the wire reinforcement.

What is the best cement mix for shower pan?

SAKRETE Sand Mix is ideal for shower bases. lt is a high-strength, pre-blended mixture of Portland Cernent and sand. This product can be used where a thickness of less than 5 cm (2 inches) is required.

Do you leave a gap between tile and shower pan?

Leaving a 1/16″ gap between the tub and tile will prevent the tile from cracking when the tub expands. Plus, a 1/16″ gap allows the caulk to properly fill the space and waterproof the transition between the tile and tub or shower.

How long does a tile shower pan last?

Tile showers will usually need to be replaced every 40 to 50 years, and they will also typically need to be re-grouted and resealed every few years. They could theoretically last for far longer than this, but the issue is that the shower pan liner will typically have an average life span of around 45 years.

Do you tile shower pan or walls first?

Floor vs wall Firstly, the tiled wall hangs over the space that the tiled floor occupies, meaning that the floor should be tiled first. This is so that the bottom row of tiles on the wall and corners can sit on the bathroom floor tiles, and thus look quite a bit more coherent.

Should you grout between shower tray and tile?

Make sure you have silicone sealant and not normal grout. Grout isn’t suitable for sealing around your bathtub or shower tray as it’s not flexible and will crack as soon as any weight is placed on the tub or tray.

Do I need a shower pan under tile?

Even if the rest of the bathroom is tiled, the shower base can be a cost-effective and time-saving measure. A shower base is easier to maintain than a tile-and-grout shower floor. Shower bases eliminate the issues of grout and having to keep grout lines clean, stain-free, mold-free and crack-free.

Do you need a moisture barrier under a shower pan?

Most prefabricated shower pans are waterproof by design and don’t require additional waterproofing of the floor, so long as it’s installed correctly.

Can you install a shower pan without mortar?

Is it necessary to set the shower base in mortar or epoxy? No. The shower base is designed to rest directly on the subfloor. Only if the floor is unlevel would mortar or leveling compound be needed.

Can I tile directly on cement board in shower?

Can I Tile Directly Onto Cement Board? Yes, cement board is the perfect base for tiling, as it’s waterproof and provides a smooth, even surface that won’t be disturbed by moisture.

What do you put between shower trays and tiles?

For a shower enclosure to be water tight and operate correctly the shower tray should be fully sealed with silicone sealant to the tiles or surrounding waterproof walls and the sealant should have cured fully prior to installing the shower door, screen or enclosure.

What’s best to stick a shower tray down?

Use installation compound adhesive or a suitable contact adhesive to cover the full area under the shower tray. Apply or trowel to a thickness suitable to allow full adhesive support of the shower tray. Note! Always follow the instructions supplied with the adhesive.

How thick should tile adhesive be for a shower?

As a general rule you need around 1-3mm thickness of tile adhesive for most wall tiles. Typically wall tiles need less adhesive than floor tiles because they endure less stress than a floor tile.

Can you put a shower pan on plywood?

Applying a waterproofing membrane over the plywood floor is vital to ensure a completely watertight shower pan.

What is the best cement for shower pans?

QUIKRETE® Floor Mud (No. 1548-81) is a Portland cement based underlayment mortar designed for leveling travertine, slate and marble floor tile, and for shower pan applications.

Does a shower pan have to be perfectly level?

The entire bottom of the shower pan needs to sit on a flat, level surface.

Do you need to tile under a shower tray?

Adjustable height shower trays We always advise fitting the shower tray before tiling the walls or installing wall panels as this ensures a more watertight seal around the sides of the tray.

Do you have to tile inside a shower?

No, it doesn’t have to be. Traditionally, tiles are used in wet areas of a bathroom (around the bath and within the shower enclosure) as a means to waterproof walls but there are now alternative materials to add a decorative, waterproofing to bathroom walls.

Do you tile over a shower pan liner?

In a typical shower construction model, there are five layers to the shower floor: the subfloor; the slope base or first mortar bed; the shower pan liner; the final mortar bed; and shower tiling or floor.

Do you have to use tile membrane?

Although it would be ideal to install a waterproof membrane in areas that would be subjected to residual moisture such as the mud room, laundry room and bathroom floors it isn’t required. It is optional. It is required to have a waterproof membrane in a shower.

How To Install A Tile Redi Shower Pan With Bench

Alright, so you’re ready to tackle that shower remodel and you’ve decided to go with a tile redi shower pan with a bench. Smart choice! They’re durable, watertight, and look amazing once you get the tile in. But before you dive in, let’s get you set up with the right tools and knowledge.

Gathering Your Gear:

First, we need to make sure you’ve got everything you need. You’ll be needing:

Tile Redi Shower Pan with Bench: This is your base. Choose one that fits your space.
Tile Redi Drain: Make sure you get one compatible with your shower pan.
Mortar: Use a high-quality mortar specifically designed for shower pans.
Backer Board: I recommend cement board, it’s water-resistant.
Waterproofing Membrane: Use a liquid membrane to seal the pan and backer board.
Silicone Sealant: For sealing around the drain and any edges.
Tools: Level, tape measure, utility knife, drill, screwdriver, trowel, grout float, safety glasses, gloves.

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty.

Step 1: Preparation

Before you start, you need to prep your shower area.

Remove the Old Shower: Rip out the old shower pan, drain, and any surrounding tile. Be careful with the plumbing, you don’t want to damage it.
Clean the Floor: Get rid of any debris or leftover adhesive.
Level the Floor: Make sure the floor is perfectly level for your shower pan.

Step 2: Install the Drain

Here’s where it gets a little technical:

Locate the Drain: Determine the position for your drain. You want it centered and in the right spot for your shower.
Cut the Drain Hole: Using a utility knife, carefully cut out the drain hole in the tile redi shower pan.
Install the Drain: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the drain.
Secure the Drain: Tighten the drain assembly securely, ensuring it sits flush with the pan.

Step 3: Install the Shower Pan

Get ready to put that pan in place!

Position the Shower Pan: Carefully place the pan in the prepared area, ensuring it’s level and aligned with your drain.
Secure the Pan: Attach the shower pan to the subfloor using the provided screws or adhesive.
Check for Level: Double-check the pan’s level. You want a perfectly flat surface for your tile.

Step 4: Install the Backer Board

Now we’re building up the walls.

Cut the Backer Board: Measure and cut the backer board panels to fit the walls of your shower area.
Attach the Backer Board: Use mortar and screws to attach the panels to the wall, making sure they’re level and butted against the shower pan.
Seal the Joints: Apply a waterproof membrane to seal the seams between the backer board panels and the shower pan.

Step 5: Waterproofing

This is crucial for a leak-free shower:

Apply the Membrane: Spread the waterproofing membrane evenly over the entire surface of the backer board and the shower pan.
Let it Dry: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying time. This might take a few hours, so be patient.
Seal the Drain: Apply silicone sealant around the drain flange to prevent leaks.

Step 6: Tiling

Time to get creative!

Prepare the Tile: Select your tiles and cut them to fit the shower walls and floor.
Apply Mortar: Spread a thin layer of mortar on the backer board and shower pan.
Install the Tiles: Place the tiles on the mortar, making sure they’re level and aligned.
Grout: Once the mortar is dry, fill in the spaces between the tiles with grout.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

You’re almost there!

Clean Up: Remove any excess grout.
Apply Sealant: Apply a sealant to protect the grout and the tile.
Install Fixtures: Install your showerhead, shower arm, and any other fixtures.
Enjoy Your New Shower: Now you can relax and enjoy your beautiful, new, and waterproof shower!

Common Tile Redi Shower Pan with Bench FAQs

Now that you’ve gone through the steps, let’s tackle some frequently asked questions:

1. How do I choose the right size shower pan?

Measure your shower area carefully. Make sure the shower pan fits comfortably within the space and leaves enough room for tiling and fixtures.

2. What is a bench made of?

Benches are typically made of the same material as the shower pan, often fiberglass or ABS plastic. It’s built into the pan and forms a solid, sturdy seat.

3. Can I add a bench to a standard shower pan?

You can add a bench to a standard shower pan, but it requires more intricate cutting and may not be as aesthetically pleasing or as sturdy as a tile redi shower pan with a bench.

4. How do I cut the tile redi shower pan?

Use a utility knife or a specialized plastic-cutting tool. Score the pan along the desired cut line multiple times, then snap or bend it along the score.

5. What kind of grout should I use for tile redi shower pans?

Use a sanded grout for larger tile gaps. For smaller tile gaps, unsanded grout is suitable. Choose a grout specifically formulated for wet areas like showers.

6. Can I install a tile redi shower pan myself?

While it is possible to install a tile redi shower pan yourself, it’s a complex project. If you’re not comfortable with DIY or lack the proper experience, hiring a professional installer is recommended.

7. What is the difference between a traditional shower pan and a tile redi shower pan?

Traditional shower pans are pre-formed units with a single piece liner and are limited to standard sizes. Tile redi shower pans are modular, meaning they can be customized to your shower space, and allow for greater design flexibility. They also offer better waterproofing and are easier to install.

8. Is it possible to use a different material for the bench than the shower pan?

It is not recommended to use a different material for the bench than the shower pan, as it can create structural issues and affect the overall watertightness. The bench is designed to be integrated with the shower pan, and using a different material can compromise the strength and durability of the entire unit.

9. What are the benefits of using a tile redi shower pan?

Customization: Tile redi shower pans are modular and can be customized to fit your specific shower space.
Waterproofing: The integrated waterproofing membrane eliminates the risk of leaks.
Durability: Tile redi shower pans are made of durable materials that can withstand years of use.
Design Flexibility: You can use any type of tile you like, allowing for a wide range of design options.

10. Can I install a tile redi shower pan over existing concrete?

Yes, you can install a tile redi shower pan over existing concrete as long as the surface is level and structurally sound. You may need to add a leveling compound or a thin layer of mortar to ensure a level surface.

11. Can I use a tile redi shower pan for an outdoor shower?

While tile redi shower pans are designed for indoor showers, they can be used for outdoor showers in certain climates. It is important to check with the manufacturer to see if their product is rated for outdoor use.

12. How do I clean a tile redi shower pan with a bench?

Use a mild detergent and warm water to clean your shower pan and bench. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the surface.

13. How do I repair cracks in a tile redi shower pan?

If you notice cracks in your tile redi shower pan, it’s best to contact a professional installer. They can assess the damage and determine the best course of action for repair.

14. Can I use tile redi shower pan for a walk-in shower?

Yes, tile redi shower pans are great for walk-in showers as they are curbless and offer a seamless transition.

Remember, these are just a few common questions. If you have any other questions or concerns, consult a professional installer. Installing a tile redi shower pan with a bench is a challenging but rewarding project that can transform your bathroom. Good luck!
